Over 500 delegates from more than 140 leading universities across Asia and beyond gathered at the Times Higher Education Asia Universities Summit held at CUHK in June, sharing insights on the latest global challenges facing them and promising to forge partnerships and cultivate leaders for the 21st century.

Nurturing leaders across the Asia Pacific on sustainable cities development

CUHK hosted the APRU Undergraduate Leaders’ Programme which brought together 55 students from 31 universities across North and South America, Asia, and Australasia. Through a series of lectures, workshops and field trips, the programme has equipped young leaders with skills to become changemakers in pursuit of building sustainable cities.

Space-bound soybeans pave the way for breakthroughs in climate-resilient farming

Researchers from CUHK have achieved a significant milestone in agricultural research by sending soybean seeds into space. The ambitious experiment aims to discover how soybean seeds and nitrogen-fixing bacteria mutate in space conditions, opening the door to new advances in agricultural technology that could make soybean farming more resilient to climate change.

CUHK launches first GMP facility in Hong Kong for cell and gene therapy

CUHK and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation jointly established the Advanced Therapy Products Good Manufacturing Practice Centre in June, which is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The centre will foster collaboration between government, academic institutions, and the industrial and commercial sectors, with the goal of establishing a world-class cell and gene therapy manufacturing industry in Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Blood test helps spot nasopharyngeal cancer and predict cancer risk

A landmark study from CU Medicine has proven that an innovative blood test can help clinicians pick up early signals of nasopharyngeal cancer, a common form of head and neck cancer. This has the potential to boost early detection and significantly enhance NPC patients’ chances of survival. The study has been published inNEJM Evidence.

Leading biomedicine development with internationally accredited biobank

CU Medicine has successfully established an internationally accredited biobank. The CU-Med Biobank will be a driving force for the development of biomedicine in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and leading Hong Kong to become an important biomedical research hub in the region. The biobank has received international accreditation from A2LA, making it one of the two biobanks that fulfill the required international standards in the Asia-Pacific region.

New page for ENSURE

A new chapter has begun for the CUHK-University of Exeter Joint Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Resilience (ENSURE) as the two universities renewed their partnership and charted new directions for the next five years. The centre will play a leading role in advancing sustainable development through research, education, public engagement, and policy advocacy.

AI for the next generation

The Jockey Club AI for the Future Project led by CUHK scholars aims to enrich junior secondary school students’ knowledge of AI and promote the use of AI for social good. The teaching and learning packs developed by the project have been adapted into a new AI module that will soon be launch for use by all publicly-funded schools in Hong Kong.
