Earning top honours for outstanding achievements
Congratulations to Prof. Francis Chan, Prof. Siew Ng and Prof. Stuart McManus (from left to right) on their remarkable achievements.
Prof. Francis Chan from CU Medicine was awarded the 15th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award by the Chinese Academy of Engineering for his outstanding contributions to medical research. Prof. Chan, with his paradigm-shifting translational research outcomes in gastroenterology and hepatology, is the only scholar from Hong Kong receiving the honour in the ‘Medicine and Health’ category of this prestigious biennial award in Chinese engineering science and technology, and engineering management.
CU Medicine’s research excellence was also affirmed by Prof. Siew Ng being selected as a New Cornerstone Investigator in the Chinese mainland, becoming the first female clinician-scientist to receive this distinction. She is also the first scholar in Hong Kong to receive this honour in the field of Biological and Biomedical Sciences. The New Cornerstone Science Laboratory, under Prof. Ng’s leadership, will dissect the complex Da Vinci Code underlying food, microbes and immunity, and bring hope for the development of novel therapeutic targets for chronic inflammation, cancer and immune-mediated diseases.
On the humanities front, Prof. Stuart McManus from the Department of History has become the first scholar from an Asian university to win the largest history prize in the world, the Dan David Prize, in recognition for his outstanding scholarship and dedication to anchoring public discourse in a deeper understanding of history.
These accolades showcase the remarkable achievements of CUHK’s faculty members, whose research excellence is making significant contributions to the world.
