Prestigious recognitions for Prof. Dennis Lo’s pioneering breakthroughs in medicine
Prof. Dennis Lo receives the inaugural Tengchong Science Prize.
Prof. Dennis Lo from CU Medicine received the inaugural Tengchong Science Award, the first science award launched entirely in mainland China and open to national and international nominations. Prof. Lo was presented the prize at the 2023 Tengchong Scientists Forum in December for his research achievements in liquid biopsy, contributing to significant scientific advances in medical research through non-invasive prenatal diagnosis and various cancer detection techniques.
Furthermore, Prof. Lo has been recently elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in recognition of his success and contribution in life sciences and medical research. Among the 59 newly elected CAS members in 2023, Prof. Lo is the only scholar from Hong Kong.
Known as the ‘father of non-invasive prenatal testing’, Prof. Lo is the Director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, Associate Dean (Research) and Chairman of the Department of Chemical Pathology of CU Medicine. He discovered the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and pioneered non-invasive DNA blood test for Down syndrome that has benefited millions of women globally. He has also developed genome-wide genetic and epigenetic approaches that lay the foundation for early detection of multiple types of cancer. Prof. Lo’s work has brought him numerous honours, including the King Faisal International Prize in Medicine, the Future Science Prize, The Fudan-Zhongzhi Science Award, the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, the Royal Medal, and the Lasker Award.
