APRU Student Global Climate Change Simulation 2024

 

The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) is now inviting applications from undergraduate and postgraduate students to participate in the 4th Annual Student Global Climate Change Simulation (virtual) which will take place between August and September 2024.

The programme is a role-playing exercise in which students from approximately 20 universities will form multi-country, multi-disciplinary teams to play the role of delegates to the UN Climate Change Negotiations. An online simulation activity will be held using materials from the World Climate Interactive and the EN-ROADS simulation model. These live sessions will be supplemented with short lectures and materials developed and curated by the APRU experts. Students who have participated in all sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

Twelve CUHK students will be selected and receive full sponsorship to join this rewarding learning activity.

 

Objectives & Activities
  • The programme aims to introduce students with the challenges of negotiations among countries on climate change and the importance of global collaboration.
  • Students will be assigned to international teams representing one of six countries/regions for two rounds of negotiations with support from international experts in climate science.
  • Each student will select one of six special topics for focused learning on the last day through discussions with an expert. Topics include oceans, biodiversity, clean energy, trading and offsets, climate migration, climate and population dynamics.

  • 23 August at 9:00-11:00am
    Day 1: Opening ceremony/kickoff
  • 30 August at 9:00-11:00am
    Day 2: Group meetings
  • 6 September at 9:00-11:30am
    Day 3: 1st round of simulation
  • 13 September at 9:00-11:30am
    Day 4: 2nd round of simulation
Eligibility
  • Open to all full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students from all disciplines.
  • Students should be:
    ➣ proficient in English to actively engage in group discussions
    ➣ able to attend all live sessions
    ➣ able to complete the homework and be prepared to participate in the discussions
  • The time commitment expected is around 15-18 hours.
  • No previous background or training in climate science required. However, students who have at least a basic understanding of the key concepts, such as carbon emissions, mitigation and adaptation, clean energy, and the Paris Agreement, will more likely to be shortlisted, and will get more out of the experience.
Programme Fee Selected students will receive full sponsorship for participation in the programme.

Students will be required to pay a deposit of HK$1,500, which will be refunded upon successful completion of the progrmame.

Application Interested students should complete an online application form by 10 May 2024 (Friday). Twelve CUHK students will be selected to participate in the programme. Students will be notified of the result around early June 2024.
